  3. In a medium bowl, whisk the eggs, water and vanilla. Add the sour cream and oil. Whisk to combine.
  4. Pour the wet mixture into the flour mixture and whisk to combine.
  5. Pour batter into prepared pans and bake for 35-40 minutes, until toothpick inserted comes out clean.
  6. Let cakes cool completely, then use a serrated knife to level the tops.
  7. Chocolate Buttercream: In a medium bowl, mix cocoa powder into buttercream until smooth.
  8. Stack cake in 6" cake board, filling with chocolate buttercream in between layers.
  9. Ice the outside of the cake with chocolate buttercream and smooth it.

Time to Decorate!

  1. Fondant: Roll out brown fondant and cover the smoothed cake. Roll out black fondant as thin as possible, cut out 1-inch squares, set aside to dry. Cover 10" cake board in white fondant, then arrange black squares on board to look like a checkerboard. Attach 6-inch cake to the cake board using royal icing.
  2. Ears: Using brown fondant cut out ears, put skewer into one side. Use the ball tool to create ear shape. Using lighter brown fondant, cut out center of ear and use water as an adhesive to attach in center. Wrap grey strip around base of ear, then let dry completely.
  3. Mouth: Use templates to cut out mouth pieces and attach together with water. Use brown fondant to attach to the side of the cake.
  4. Eyes: Use circle cutters to cut eye pieces, then press into round tablespoon to create eye shape. Attach fondant pieces together using water, then use royal icing to attach to side of cake.
  5. Cheeks & Eyebrows: With black fondant, cut out cheeks with circle cutter and eye brows. Attach to cake with water.
  6. Hat: Press Rice Krispies treat into small cylinder hat shape. Cover in black fondant and wrap the bottom with a thin red strip. Cut out base of hat with circle cutter with black fondant and attach top of hat to it on the cake.
  7. After ears have dried, stick them into the sides of the cake.
  8. Place black ribbon around the edge of the cake board.
