  • Optional: Baking “pizza” cutter: http://amzn.to/1HxzEt7

Let's get started!

  1. Line and grease the 8" pan and glass bowl.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the salt and flour. Set aside
  3. In another large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar.
  4. Add the eggs one at a time and mix until well incorporated.
  5. Add the cocoa powder and mix again.
  6. Alternate adding the dry ingredients and buttermilk to the wet ingredients, starting and ending with the dry ingredients.
  7. In a small bowl, mix together the vinegar and baking soda. Add to the cake mixture and mix again.
  8. Tint the cake batter with blue food coloring.
  9. Fill the 8" cake pan and glass bowl about 3/4 full.
  10. Bake the 8" cake at 350F for about 25 minutes.
  11. Bake glass bowl cake at 325F for about 40-50 minutes.
  12. Level and let it cool completely.

Time to decorate!

  1. Place the 8" cake on a cake sheet slightly towards to back to make room for the bill of the hat.
  2. Pipe a thin layer of buttercream frosting and spread evenly with an offset spatula.
  3. Place the glass bowl cake flat side down on the 8" cake.
  4. using a sharp knife, carve the sides of the cake and shape it to look more like a hat.
  5. Cover the whole cake completely with buttercream icing. Place it in the freezer for 30 minutes to chill.
  6. Roll out the blue fondant to about 1/8" thick. Cut out a bill shape for the hat.
  7. Take the rest of the blue fondant and use it to cover the hat completely. Use a knife or scissors to remove the excess fondant.
  8. Roll out the white fondant, cut out another bill shape and place it in front of the blue hat. Use a little bit of water to make it stick.
  9. Place the blue bill in front of the hat and cut off the excess.
  10. Use a detailed mini roller to add the seams to the add for more detail.
  11. Roll a small blue button for the top of hat.
  12. Cut out a small pine tree shape using the blue fondant and stick it on the front of the hat.
