Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Cupcakes
Things you'll need
Ingredients- 2 cups all purpose flour
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- ¾ teaspoon baking soda
- 1 teaspoon dark cocoa powder
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 2/3 cup buttermilk
- 1 cup vegetable oil
- 1 egg
- ¼ teaspoon vanilla extract
- ½ teaspoon distilled vinegar
- Food coloring: electric green, green
- Large mixing bowl
- Medium mixing bowl
- Hand mixer
- Whisk
- Rubber spatula
- Baking spray
- Knife
- Silicone baking cups: orange, red, purple, and blue
- Cupcake tray
- Green buttercream frosting in a decorating bag with a #10 tip
- Brown frosting in decorating bag with a #2 tip
- Candy eyes
- Light cocoa melts
- Fondant: orange, red, purple, and blue
- Fondant rolling pin & roller tool
- Small offset spatula
- #12 tip
Let's get started!
- Preheat oven to 350ºF.
- Line 12 muffin cups with silicone baking liners of each color and then spray with baking spray.
- In a large bowl, whisk together flour, salt, baking soda and cocoa powder.
- In another bowl, beat sugar and oil together. Beat in buttermilk, eggs and vanilla. Add vinegar and mix.
- Combine wet and dry ingredients and beat until there are no lumps. Use a silicone spatula to mix in food coloring.
- Scoop the batter to fill liners about 2/3 full. Bake for 15 to 20 minutes. Once cupcakes have completely cooled, cut off the domes.
Time to decorate!
- Frost the tops of each cupcake with green frosting and then smooth with an offset spatula.
- Pipe a kidney bean shape on the bottom half of each cupcake for the mouths (PICTURE at 3:33).
- Roll out fondant and cut into thin strips for masks (PICTURE at 4:22). Cut a small slit on the end of each mask and then cut out circles for the eyes. Make 3 masks per color.
- Arrange candy eyes behind the mask so they show through. Place the eyes and masks on the top end of the each cupcake above their mouths. Match each mask color with the cupcake liner.
- Use a #2 tip to pipe out cocoa candy melt smiles onto each of their mouths. COWABUNGA!
